The Story of Manuka — From Sacred Tree to Modern Elixir

Long before jars lined the shelves of modern kitchens, before labels and grading systems, there grew in the wild, wind-shaped landscapes of New Zealand a humble,  resilient tree. The Māori people, the first guardians of this land, knew it not as ordinary, but as taonga — a treasure.

They saw early on that this tree was something special.
From its leaves, they brewed warm infusions to calm fevers and soothe the body. From its bark came remedies for pain and restlessness. Its golden gum softened burns and eased troubled breath. In their hands, the tree became more than a plant — it became a living pharmacy, rooted deeply in both earth and tradition.

When European settlers arrived, they, too, felt its quiet pull. They learned from the Māori, steeping its leaves into tea, extracting its oils, shaping its wood into tools for daily life. But it was not until 1839, when an English beekeeper named Mary Bumby brought her honeybees across the sea, that something truly remarkable began.

Her bees found the Manuka blossoms.

And from those blossoms, they created what many believe to be the very first honey ever made on these shores — a honey unlike any other. Dark, rich, and layered with something almost mysterious.

For generations, its healing nature was simply known, passed quietly from hand to hand. Then, in 1980, biochemist Peter Molan gave science to what tradition had always understood — confirming the unique antibacterial strength hidden within this golden liquid.

As word spread, so did its allure. Demand grew, and with it, the need to protect what was real. In 1998, the UMF Honey Association introduced the UMF grading system, a mark of authenticity, purity, and trust. Each jar would now carry proof of its origin — a quiet promise that what lay inside was true Manuka honey.

Later, the discovery of methylglyoxal gave rise to the MGO scale, measuring the very compound that gives this honey its strength. The higher the number, the deeper its potency — as if each drop held a concentrated echo of the land it came from.

Today, Manuka honey is known around the world. Yet at its heart, it remains what it has always been:

A gift from a tree once called treasure.
A meeting of nature, tradition, and time.
And in every spoonful, you taste something real — something that has been valued for generations.
